Salutations & Introductions
Welcome to The Barbershop.
Broadcasting Thursday nights from 9pm-11pm Pacific. Your hosts, ThaiMex and Santanna Hill are ready to offer you a place to lay low and vibe out. The Barbershop is a study in hip-hop music, it's influences, and all things related... near or far.
ThaiMex is a writer, producer and performer native to San Diego, CA. Although not exclusive to any genre of art, he is primarily recognized as a producer and performer in San Diego’s hip-hop music scene as a former member of both the Hue of Intuition and Infinite Shades of Gray collectives as well as in the literary scene as a former member of the seminal Chicano spoken word poetry collective The Taco Shop Poets. He was co-creator of the former hip-hop showcase known as Elemental and, in addition to his personal endeavors, ThaiMex has provided musical production for many of San Diego’s hip-hop elite including ICONS, Scribe Sayar, and Riccasshay.
Also a San Diego native, Santanna Hill was actually born musically deaf until he came across his first Sony Walkman back in 1985. While surfing across the radio waves, Doug E. Fresh’s classic “The Show” caught his attention and thus began his love affair with hip-hop. Having lived in various locations across the country from Upstate New York to the Dirty South in Hotlanta, Santanna’s musical tastes are diverse. Favorite artists range from A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and The Pharcyde to Terence Trent D’Arby, Portishead, and Esthero. Although he’s the first to admit that he’s no Audiophile, he cannot deny the penetrating effects of hip-hop as the background theme song for his life.
Both ThaiMex and Santanna attended high school together where their first incarnation of The Barbershop took form. Quite frequently, their group of friends would trade off clipper duties on each other’s fades while listening to and critiquing music and life in general. This is nothing new from crowded garages of teenagers to grown folks in established barbershops or salons across the country. The Barbershop is simply an extension of that vibe.
So come on thru, have a seat, and get ready for the weekend with some fresh cuts at The Barbershop.
